What Is The Voip Gatekeeper?
CAC, which is call admission control prevent an over subscription of Voip networks. This concept applies to real time media traffic which brings us to an H.323 Gatekeeper. The Voip gatekeeper serves the purpose of the call admission control and the translation services from E.164 ID's, which is usually just a phone number, to IP addresses in an H.323 telephony network.
The Voip gateway is a computing term that is used for a virtual network switch that manages the H.323 zone. It provides address information and translation. The H.323 are protocols that were established by the Telecommunications Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T).
A PSTN or Public switched telephone network needs to be converted to either H.323 protocols or SIP which is Session Initiation Protocol based Voip traffic. The Voip gatekeeper can provide billing, alarming, built-in interactive voice response, routing, digit manipulation, and security.
To get back to basics in order to know what a Voip gatekeeper is, Voip means Voice over internet protocol and it is simply the transmission of voice traffic over an internet based connection. Or even more simply put, Voip are internet phones. A Voip gatekeeper is an external controller of a gateway. A gateway is a network device that helps to convert voice and fax calls in real time between an IP network and a PSTN which is simply put, the telephone system. The Voip gatekeeper is somewhat like a management system of the Voip network. It provides address translation, admissions control, bandwidth control, zone management, call control signaling, call authorization, bandwidth management, and call management. Just like a phone company sends a person their bill identifying every single call that was placed or every single call that came in on that line, they would be the gatekeeper of the phone numbers that they service. So, the Voip gatekeeper is the manager for the telephony network that the gateway is on. A Voip Gatekeeper is a program that is purchased to manage a persons Voip gateway that they have installed on their computer. Voip is the future where internet phone calling is going to drown out any source of land line calling anymore. All one needs in order to have Voip is a broadband connection, a router, and a Voip gateway. The router acts as the standard telephone line and the gateway is what translates the analog signals that we speak into digital format so that whoever is on the other end can understand.
